How do PIX keys work? Can I have more than one?

Hey everyone, can you clear up a question for me about PIX. I currently have accounts at BB (main), Nubank, Neon, Inter, Next, Santander, and others. If I register my PIX key at Nubank, will I only receive PIX transfers to my Nubank account? And if I want to send money to another account of mine, would I have to use TED? This still isn’t clear to me — how the keys will work in relation to the banks.

I may be talking a load of nonsense, but what I understood is that you can have up to 5 PIX keys (CPF, email, phone number, and random code). Each key is linked to an account (it’s possible to transfer keys between accounts). So, in your case, you’d choose the 5 institutions you use most.
Once the keys run out, the other accounts are limited to TED/DOC only.

According to Nubank’s blog:

Keep in mind that this is not mandatory for being able to receive or make an instant payment. You can still use Pix, but you’ll have to enter all the account details — just like with TED, for example.

From what I understand, only 5 keys per account, meaning if you have 10 banks, you can have up to 50 keys — the problem is remembering all of them.

Yes, you’re right. The limit is per account, not per “person”:

But each key can only be associated with 1 account, meaning your CPF will only be in one account, each of your phone numbers will only be in 1 account.
So in practice we’ll have few keys tied to things we have, and we’ll be able to create more random keys (QR code?).
I heard somewhere about user-defined keys, but I didn’t find much about it — like it would be interesting to have a key with the company’s name.

From what I understood, it’s a randomly generated set of numbers, letters, and symbols, so I think it’s going to be hard to have one with a trade name. I believe the best alternative is to have an email like pix@minhaempresa.com.br.
As for the QR Code, yes, there will be one too, especially in the case of generating single-use keys.

The QR code is independent of the keys. It is indeed standardized in the PIX regulation, but it is not a key used in the QR code format; rather, it is a standardized data formatting (which includes a receiver key but several other parameters).

PIX QR codes are divided into:

  • Static - QR code identifying a PIX account, used for transfers but the payer chooses the amount sent
  • Dynamic - QR code identifying a specific transaction. Generated at the time of the transaction with all relevant data to complete it without any need for additional information (this should be the one used more in retail and e-commerce)

You can find more information in the official initiation standards documentation, which includes the standards that will be used by the QR code.

I’m seriously considering registering just a random key for each account I have and that’s it.

No registering my CPF, email, cell phone…

After all, it’s nothing more than a key, just that.

When I provide my key for a purchase, for example, all my other details will be confirmed. The same goes if a friend wants to transfer me money via account.

I’ve noticed that the random key is safer, definitive because each account of each person will have its own, with minimal risk of exposing personal data.

In a purchase you don’t provide your key, only in a sale.
It’s the recipient who provides the key, not the sender.

Even better

Pix keys: 5 per individual account, 20 per business account.

Banco Central do Brasil, Item 7.4

That’s not how it works. YOUR identifier will be YOUR CPF, YOUR EMAIL, YOUR PHONE NUMBER, or a random key generated by the Bank. In the PIX universe (considering ALL Banks), YOU are exclusively identified by ONE of these pieces of info and there CANNOT be another account of yours using the same key!!! As for the random key, each bank generates its own, so I believe that one won’t cause a conflict in the System when identifying you.

It would be nice if you could create a username, like @mycompany

I created several emails with my personal domain to use as Pix keys at the banks I use.

And as they’ve already explained there, each account can have up to five keys, but you can’t use the same key on two different accounts. If you’ve set your CPF as a key with bank A, you can’t use it as a key with bank B. If you’ve already set your CPF and phone number with one bank, your options for other banks are: different email addresses and a random key.

I’m doing this too!

My main details (CPF, phone number, and primary email) are already registered on my main account, and I’m creating specific emails for Pix in other accounts that I think will serve more for me to move money between accounts than for other people hahaahy

create an email for the company pix@mycompany.com.br

How do I get a custom domain? Only paid plans?

It depends on the domain.
There are some domains you can get for free, like .tk

But if you want .com or .com.br, you have to pay.
If you find .com or .com.br being offered for free, it’s probably a scam.

Great answer. I had that same question. I was under the impression that each individual could have a maximum of 5 keys, but actually the limit is per account.
Nice one!
Thanks!
