Good afternoon. I won an AOC TV (Roku) in a raffle, specifically model 32S5045/78G.
Although it’s the first “Smart TV”, I’m already well aware of the reputation and problems of these devices. For example, I know how Roku pushed arbitrariness as a condition for accepting terms of use. And, also, how Roku TVs started showing ads on the home screen.
Knowing this, I already set it up prepared to connect to a Wi‑Fi without internet. Fortunately, there wasn’t any insurmountable requirement to connect to the Internet to use the HDMI input, nor a requirement to create a Roku account, but more “smart” features are apparently hidden.
And one of these hidden features seems to be Miracast/AirPlay/etc. Android doesn’t detect the TV, even when connected to the hotspot created by the Android phone (because I used the Android hotspot, without active mobile data, to prevent connectivity with Roku servers and avoid any problematic updates or ad injections).
According to the spec sheet I found, the device has the feature, but it doesn’t appear either in the menus or on the home screen, which only shows the three HDMI inputs, the USB media player, and Open TV.
Do these TVs really lock the screen mirroring functionality behind an online account, with no possibility of using an offline connection for such mirroring?
