Is there any way to disable the shutter sound without rooting?

Original title was: Is there any way to remove the third-party camera shutter sound on Android 10 without resorting to root?

I actually understand why Android was forced to add this shutter sound, but unfortunately it’s really annoying. It even happens in silent mode. (It didn’t happen on Android 9)

I’ve always used my phone’s camera to take pictures of the board so I can pay attention to explanations (I have very poor eyesight), but with the sound bothering everyone, there’s no chance.

I even know where the file I’d need to remove is, but the system folder is read-only and to change that, I’d need su. But that requires rooting. The problem is that rooting causes many apps and games to stop working properly or stop working altogether due to anti-cheat systems.

I use A Better Camera Unlocked for photos, but even though it still produces great results, this app hasn’t been updated in years. I prefer it because of the wide range of adjustments and ease of use.

Any ideas besides switching apps and/or using the stock camera (which produces results that are pretty bad for my taste)?

That depends on the manufacturer and varies a lot from smartphone to smartphone. Have you looked into this topic in the subforum for your device on XDA Developers? Maybe there’s a specific tweak for your model that can be done without root…

But it was working before, now it’s not. :\

Yep, but it doesn’t work on the Redmi 7. And not every app started making noise. WhatsApp, for example, doesn’t.

Can’t you do that using ADB without root?

Nope. Requires root. :\
I can’t mount the directory as read/write without su.

It’s an automatic feature that activates silent mode whenever the camera app is opened.

Oops. Too bad mine doesn’t do that. Even when I set it to silent mode or DND, it keeps doing this. In my case, a Redmi 7.

Look, I don’t know if this is the case with Xiaomi (or China), but phones sold in Japan don’t let you disable the shutter sound even in silent mode. This is due to industry self-regulation to prevent people from taking hidden photos (for example, up a woman’s skirt without her noticing).

That might be why. And if that’s the reason, it’s very likely you can only change how it works with root.

I have a Redmi Note 7, I leave it on silent 100% of the time and use GCam and OpenCamera. There’s no camera sound at all.

Considering your app is old, it might not work well with newer versions of Android.

I know that story. It’s just that mine has a global ROM, and as I said… on Android 9 it was silent. hahaha

If I’m not mistaken, the last update was in mid-2019.

Have you checked if the device’s region setting is configured correctly?
If it’s set to a country other than Brazil, try changing it to Brazil and see if that fixes it.

I think it must be set to the United Kingdom because of the English there. (I don’t really like the PT/PT-BR/EN-US translation)

When my device went to Android 10, OpenCamera stopped recording raw audio, probably due to changes in the camera API, which should be similar to your case as well.
